Après une formation d’architecte et des cours de dessin à l’académie de dessin de Toulouse , la sculpture est apparue comme une révélation , un travail de soliste plus que de chef d’orchestre…indépendance et liberté .
« Aux origines de mon travail c’est la nature , en particulier l’animal , qui est ma source d’inspiration , inépuisable et fascinante de diversité .
Je suis un Figuratif mais pas un Naturaliste , ce qui me permet de nuancer les détails , les gommer ou les accentuer selon le propos et le matériau . »
C’est essentiellement de la terre que naissent les sculptures de Jean-François Leroy .
Un peu de taille directe parfois , mais à cela le temps ne fait pas l’affaire .
C’est donc le plus souvent l’argile qui est modelé puis ciselé , poncé et lissé suivant son hygrométrie et l’avancement de l’oeuvre .

Lorsqu’il s’agit de réaliser un bronze, de nombreuses étapes techniques qu’il maitrise vont se succéder dans son atelier .
En dehors de la coulée confiée à son fondeur il réalise moules , cires , soudures , ciselures , polissages , patines .
